One of our favorite things about wine is its ability to transport you to faraway lands by just closing your eyes and taking a sip. So we’ve put together a little “world tour” that will get you dreaming of strange and wonderful new places and appreciating the worldwide quest to make great wine. New Zealand is the most exciting new world producer of Sauvignon Blanc and Goose Bay Sauvignon Blanc makes clear why, with mouthwatering acidity and balanced herbaceousnes. Traveling north to Israel, encounter Carmel Kayoumi Single Vineyard White Riesling, an off-dry white wine whose creators have spared no expense to make perfect. You can pair either of these whites with favorite fish and poultry dishes, or fresh salads.
Shiloh Barbera, also from Israel, is a red wine that is light in color but very deep in flavor, and crafted by one of Israel’s most talked-about new winemakers. Returning to the “old world” of Europe, experience Bartenura Chianti, Tuscany’s classic Sangiovese-based red that brims with red fruit flavors and earthy depth. These wines are great with pizza, red-sauced pasta or meat antipasti.
From Spain, Elvi Rioja shows that this style of wine that has been made for centuries has not lost a step, with ripe fruit flavors and intriguing hints of leather. Finally, where else but Bordeaux would anyone want to end a wine journey? Baron de Rothschild Medoc is the genuine article--a Cabernet-heavy red wine that is elegant and opulent at the same time, brimming with dark fruit and cedary complexity. These classics are best served with roast red meat or game birds, or a rich stew.
