The 2002 Bordeaux vintage changed the international wine market, with across-the-board quality no one was prepared for—connoisseurs and retailers alike. As a result, prices spiked and supplies of these incredible wines vanished almost as soon as they hit shelves. We were lucky to snag a very small quantity of this vintage’s wine from the renowned second-growth Chateau Leoville-Poyferre that we are privileged to offer you today. If you are serious about great red wines, you cannot miss what may be one of your last chances to experience a 2005 Bordeaux. According to Robert Parker, Leoville-Poyferre is “The most seductive, approachable and charming of the three Leovilles” (the others being Leoville-Barton and Leoville-Las Cases). You will agree when you luxuriate in the aromas of crème de cassis, licorice and toasty oak, and the flavors of ripe blackberry with supple, opulent tannins. If you are a collector, this is one for your cellar. If you simply love great wine, it is drinking well now, especially alongside a chateaubriand or roast leg of lamb.

Since I’m a big fan of previous vintages, I was very excited to open this bottle. While there wasn’t much for the nose on this wine (it was muted), there was plenty to keep the other two senses busy. Garnet in color with a violet rim with purple hues; stunning in the glass. On the palate, an array of black fruit, licorice and spicy oak play together against a background of mouth coating tannins creating an absolutely luscious mouthfeel. Full-bodied with a long finish that has pleasing mint note. The wine is still young and rambunctious and will definitely show better in the coming years.
