The Barkan Reserve "Altitude" line is the ultimate in specificity, with each single-vineyard bottling noting how many meters above sea level the grapes were grown. A climb of 624 meters brings you to the Alma vineyard, a 20 hectare plot in the Northern Galil. Here, limestone and basalt soils force the vines to struggle year-round which perfects the character of their fruit. With a deep garnet color, aromas of raspberry and black cherry flood your senses and prepare you for the subtle yet intense flavor profile, featuring stewed plum and wet asphalt framed by fresh vanilla bean. Full-bodied with assertive tannins, this is a serious red wine and should be paired with lamb meatballs and couscous, or prime rib.
Full flavored meat or rich sauced chicken dishes.
Flavors of ripe, generous black fruit, with blackberries and black cherries intermingled with sweet spices such as vanilla and cinnamon.

Vintage Reviewed: 2007 (Reviewed on 1/20/13) -
The Reserve Altitude Series is a relatively new (and welcomed) product line from Barkan, with 2007 only its second vintage. Barkan’s idea was to grow Cabernet Sauvignon at different elevations in different micro-climates and see how these factors express themselves through the wine. According to Barkan, this represents a departure from their traditional strategy for their Reserve line, whereby they harvest from multiple vineyards, process the wines individually, and then blend to achieve “the sum is greater than its partsâ€. There are three wines in the series, each representing a different altitude (in meters): +412, +624 and +720.
The +624 Cabernet Sauvignon is sourced from Barkan’s Alma vineyard in the Northern Galil, processed, and then aged for 14 months in mostly new French oak.
In the glass, the wine is garnet with a subtle purple hue. On the nose, aromas of blackberry, plum, cherry, and currants with the plum notes increasing in intensity as the wine spent time in the glass. On the palate, a chock full of berries, laced with an unmistakable note of fresh orange, hints of vanilla, and some spice. The body is full, tannins are gripping but balanced, and the finish is long with lasting notes of sweet wood. The wine has significantly improved since my last tasting 6 months ago. It’s very open, quite bright, and “in your faceâ€. Curious to see how this will develop over time. Enjoy! - Name: Dave the wine guy (Reviewed on 2/7/12)
- The Barkan Altitude 624 Cabernet Sauvignon is another Blockbuster hit from Barkan Winery. This wine has a strong nose, very well integrated fruit, and an a lingering finish. This wine can be enjoyed now or it can continue to develop in the bottle.
